Overview
E384 on a Baxi GA range means the boiler has detected a flame while the gas valve was commanded closed. In other words the control system is seeing combustion when it expects no gas flow. This is a safety lockout designed to prevent uncontrolled combustion or unsafe operation. The fault can be caused by a number of things including a stuck or leaking gas valve, a faulty flame sensor or wiring, spurious signal from the PCB, or internal wiring/earth/voltage problems that make the controller think a flame is present. Severity: this is potentially serious because it involves gas and flame detection circuitry. It can be a temporary electronic glitch that clears with a single reset, but repeated occurrences or any sign of a gas smell should be treated as an emergency and dealt with by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Homeowners can perform a few simple safety checks and a single controlled reset, but internal checks or repairs to gas valve, electrodes or PCB must only be done by a qualified professional.
Possible Cause: Flame detected when gas valve off
Troubleshooting Steps
Safety first:
1) If you smell gas anywhere in the house: do not operate any electrical switches or the boiler. Turn off gas at the appliance isolation or meter if trained to do so, get everyone out, ventilate if safe, and call the national gas emergency number immediately. 2) If no gas smell, proceed with caution. Do not open or try to repair the boiler yourself. Any work on gas components must be done by a Gas Safe engineer.
Initial homeowner checks:
1) Check other gas appliances (hob, oven) to confirm there is gas supply. If nothing else works, check prepayment meter credit if applicable. 2) Check boiler pressure on the pressure gauge — aim for roughly 1.0–1.5 bar for a typical system. Top up via the filling loop only if you know how; if pressure is very low or keeps dropping, that is a separate issue needing a pro. 3) Check flue/air vents outside for obvious blockages (birds, nesting, debris) that could affect combustion or sensors.
Reset procedure (one controlled attempt):
1) Find the boiler reset: either a button marked reset or a selector switch that can be turned to R. 2) Press and hold the reset or hold the selector in R for 5–10 seconds. 3) Observe the boiler’s start sequence. If the boiler relights and runs normally, monitor it for recurrence for the next few hours. If the E384 returns, stop resetting and call for service.
What the homeowner should NOT do:
1) Do not repeatedly reset the boiler if the fault returns — repeated resets can worsen faults or mask a dangerous condition. 2) Do not open the casing, manipulate gas valves, electrodes, wiring, or the PCB. 3) Do not attempt to replace ignition or sensing components yourself.
If the fault persists or is intermittent, call a Gas Safe registered engineer and provide the following information: boiler model (Baxi GA range), exact error code E384, when it started, whether you detected any gas smell, whether the fault cleared after a reset, recent power outages or servicing history, and boiler pressure reading. What the engineer will check (for your information):
1) Verify flame signal wiring and condition of the flame sensing electrode; check for carbon or poor electrode position causing false readings. 2) Test the gas valve for leakage or sticking when closed, and verify valve wiring and polarity. 3) Inspect PCB and connectors for faults, corrosion, or intermittent faults and check mains voltage levels (low voltage can cause strange behaviour). 4) Check for rogue sources of heat/ionisation or backflow from other appliances and confirm correct flue operation and air supply. 5) Perform full combustion and safety checks after any repairs.
Final note: E384 involves gas and flame detection — if it does not clear after one careful reset or if you are at all unsure, arrange an immediate Gas Safe engineer visit. Do not attempt internal repairs yourself.
